Most people love the smile that their braces give them, but not as many people are as enthralled by the actual braces themselves. As a result, it may surprise you to hear that some people wonder whether they can get braces twice!
For a few reasons, some people may need a second round of braces after getting them the first time. If you’re wondering why that could be, here are a few reasons that it might be necessary to do that.
Reason #1: Not Wearing Retainer
Orthodontic treatment doesn’t end the day you get your braces off—your teeth will need a little bit of time to solidify into place. That’s where the retainer comes in. You will need to wear your retainer each night to give your teeth the support they need to stay in their new position.
However, not everybody thinks that they need to wear their retainer. As a result, they may see their teeth start to move out of position after a while, and may need a second round of braces to correct the issue.
Reason #2: Phase 2 Orthodontics
People tend to think of braces as something you get after your permanent teeth come in, but for issues like severe crossbites that appear in childhood, it may be a better idea to start braces to address the problem while the jaw is still at its most pliable.
This is called phase 1 orthodontics, and it’s usually used to target one specific issue. As a result, it’s common for people to need a second round of braces once their permanent teeth do come in. This may make two rounds of braces ultimately necessary.
How to Get it Right the First Time
If you want to get braces once and only once, the most important thing you can do is to wear your retainer once you’re done. Then make a few more trips to your orthodontist to ensure that your teeth are holding in position, and you should be able to get the straight smile you’re looking for in one go.
